Are they safe?
If your hoverboard is UL2272 certified, and your child meets the minimum weight requirement of the board –then yes, hoverboards are safe for kids to ride. You should also follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on usage and battery charging.
The reports of hoverboards catching fire were from hoverboards that were not UL-certified. These were cheap low quality ones, with battery packs that were not tested.
Always make sure an adult is supervising when a child is riding a hoverbaord and that the child is wearing a helmet and safety gear (more below).
The best place to buy a safe hoverboard, is to buy it from large and well-established retailers such as Amazon, who only allow UL2227 certified hoverboards to be sold on their site. You should beware of cheaper knock-off models that are not UL2272 certified.
How old do you have to be to ride a hoverboard?
Most kid’s hoverboards have a minimum weight requirement of 40lbs, which is the average weight of a 4-5yr old. So it really depends on the weight of your child, not only their age. There have been videos on YouTube of children as young as 3 years old (!) riding a hoverboard. So it also depends on the individual child’s natural balancing and riding skills.
What is the weight limit of the hoverboard?
Many kids hoverboards have minimum and maximum weight limits. So you’ll want to make sure you find one with a suitable weight range for your child. Maybe you’d like your child to get many years of use from it, or for older family members to enjoy riding it too – in this case look for a higher maximum weight limit
Size of the wheels
For kids, hoverboards with a wheel size of around 6.5” is best. These hoverboards are smaller than adult sized hoverboards (with wheels around 10.5”) making them lighter and easier for little ones to maneuver.
Do children need to wear safety gear?
Yes! Any hoverboard rider (including adults) needs to wear safety gear. Just as cyclists need to wear helmets and protective pads, hoverboard riders should too. At a minimum, kids should always wear a safety helmet. Safety pads are also important to prevent injuries and protect them from cuts and scrapes if they fall. Most hoverboards (but not all), have this function which is a handy addition for beginners and young riders. The training mode usually has a low speed and is not as sensitive to movements, making it easier to control.
For safety purposes, you might want a lower maximum speed setting for your child. To ensure that they can’t go at fast speeds.
